Feb 18th, 2009 by Michelle Lauren

Hi everyone! I’m still riding high on the joys of getting my first cover art for Starstruck, coming April 2009 from Liquid Silver Books.

This got me thinking about cover art in general, so I’ve posted two polls below. Please take a moment and share your thoughts.

* *NOTE: Please leave your comments on THIS post instead of the one attached to the poll. Thanks!**

@ Lillie: Thanks for voting and for sharing your thoughts! I’m more of the group that feels the type of cover depends on the genre and the quality of the graphics.

I’m not a fan of CGI-looking cover art; I like work done by Anne Caine and Cris Griffin, where the graphics don’t look like a computer game, but rather like really intricate and life-like sketches. I also tend to feel illustrated covers work better on fantasy, urban fantasy, futuristic and paranormal stories.

I didn’t realize at first that people could leave comments at the actual poll site. However, please try to leave your comments on this post, since I’m checking throughout the day.

@ Jillian: Thanks so much for your feedback. My preferences are more by genre. I prefer illustrated covers on books in fantasy/sci-fi/paranormal.

In contemporary romance, I have seen some illustrated covers that are well done (Legend by Jude Devereux, for instance, shows a gorgeous drawing of a table set with the most yummy food you can imagine; that’s still one of my favorite books). Also, A Dance Through Time by Lynn Kurland shows a drawn cover and not live models.
